Hitchhiker Knitted Scarf Goes Viral

I never really think about knitting as going viral but that is what happened when I started knitting Maltina Behm’s Hitchhiker Shawlette. As of  today there are 6,500 projects on Ravelry. If you did the math at roughly $5.00 a pattern that is a homerun wow! Four members in my Saturday knitting group have already completed it or and are in the process of making it. Then when I tweeted my finished scarf I received many retweets for information about the hitchhiker scarf pattern and where they can get it.

I fell in love with the scarf / shawlette at Stitiches, a woman in a booth was wearing it to show how their yarns knitted up. I knew then I had to have it. The scarf is really quite simple and I am not sure whether it is the points or the way it drapes that makes it so stunning.

As you can see in the picture I finally finished mine and I love it! It will definitely be a big part of my Fall Wardrobe. I completed all 41 points per the pattern and it took at least 500 yards of sock weight yarn. I am not sure of the exact amount. If you make all 41 points it is quite large and is more of a shawlette than a scarf in my mind. I wrote a post about the yarn when I first started on the hitchhiker scarf journey  and a few progress images. At the end of the pattern Martina recommends 7 rows without adding any stitches and claims it makes the shawlette less pointy. I don’t know if I agree and if I were to make it again I might leave those rows out.

I will post the pictures of the other ladies in the knitting group and their scarves or shawlettes when possible. Maybe I can get a group picture. It is fun to compare the different looks and yarns.

It looks fantastic. I am a beginner and I am knitting the same pattern; however when I finish a row and I put it down for a while when I go back I am not sure (knitting on circular needles) which end I am supposed to start with. Any suggestions? Thanks
