Knitting Is Not a Winter Sport

Today launches the beginning of the second half of 2012 and summer is swirling around us. Knitting has always been analogous with winter but not around here. Yesterday it must have reached 90 degrees and the knitters were out in full force. There were at least 6 of us sitting under the umbrellas at the Corte Madera Town Center with needles in hand. What I love most about knitting is the portability. You can do it anywhere without much hassle and in the summer the number of locations is endless. I will admit some yarns or projects are more appealing to work with in the summer rather than the winter and fingerless gloves are not on my needles at the moment. (click any image below to enlarge)

Twist and Shout Dress and Plum Cake from Lisa

Saturday’s weekly knit gathering felt really special, Lisa the knit maven or knit every day gal, brought a fresh picked and baked plum cake (click the link for recipe). It was delicious and definitely worth going off the diet. That cute little “twist and shout” dress is only one of three she has made. Lisa is what I would call “a knitting machine”.

Lita in her Madeline Tosh Shawl

Then Lita brought out her beautiful Madeline Tosh Yarn hand knit shawl she recently completed. We all “oowed and ahhed” over it. Lita is one of those that knits with only the finest and lightest weights of yarn. Everything she makes has a wonderful drape with her personal signature which you can see from her picture.

Anne, June and Daisey

When we thought all the sharing was over June arrives with Daisy both looking quite dapper. June, Anne’s partner, is fashioning her smart looking vest Anne proudly hand knit for her. Note the buttons with buttonholes and slit pockets in the front, fine job Anne. I think Daisy is more interested in the deli than the knitting.

I am honored to be a part of such a talented group. I would love to go into more detail on each of them but to sum it up not only can these ladies knit but Lisa is a published author, Lita an accomplished painter and Anne is the artistic director for a theater company with her partner June. Need I mention they all have day jobs. When I hear talk about knitters having too much time on their hands obviously it is quite the opposite within this group.

That was the finale for the first half of 2012 I can only imagine what great things will happen the second half of the year. I would love to hear about your first half projects and any plans you have for the second half of 2012. Share your favorite places to knit in the summer.
