Needle Felting and What Is Felting

Today I returned to A Verb For Keeping Warm and learned how to needle felt with @sonyaphilip. When I registered for the class I thought it was “wet” felting which shows what I knew about felting before I took the class. Felt or felting is a non-woven cloth or item that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woolen fibres. It is important that the fibres are mainly wool

I learned there are three types of felting:

  1. Needle felting – or dry felting
  2. Wet felting
  3. Fulling or Washed felting – a garment or item is washed in the washing machine shrinks and becomes matted to give a felt like appearance or finish.

Needle felting is a good way to embellish a garment and can be an alternative to embroidery. You can also make notions and buttons with needle felting.  Today a popular craft is making little needle felted animals, gnomes, mushrooms, foods, ornaments, you name it!

Every part is needle felted in therefore you never cut the fibres, apply glue to add an element color.  I will have to admit there were many times I was tempted to use scissors.

Below are pictures from the class and I made the snowman. I need to knit him a scarf! Felting is fun, you should try it.
